1. The Public Protector is the South African equivalent of a national ombudsman . The office is, however, entrusted with extraordinarily wide powers to ‘take appropriate remedial action’ following an investigation into the conduct of any organ of state. Only court decisions are excluded from this jurisdiction. The power to direct the remedial action to be taken, even at the highest levels of authority, is a relatively new development in public advocacy and of particular interest in newly established constitutional democracies.
