Immediately after its independence in 1962, Algeria opted for the establishment of a socialist state as a means of development. This one-party system was introduced to govern a people that were sociologically and culturally disintegrated due to French colonization, which had lasted for over a century. This choice was enshrined in the 1963 Constitution; it was then confirmed and consolidated in the 1976 Constitution.
