The State of Tocantins is located in the center of Brazil. It is bordered to the north by the State of Maranhão, to the east by the States of Maranhão, Piaui and Bahia, to the south by the State of Goiás and to the west by the States of Mato Grosso and Pará. The capital of the state is Palmas, on which construction did not start until 1989. It has a surface area of 277,620 square kilometers (107,190 square miles) and, with a population of 1,496,880 as of 2014, is the fifth least populous State of Brazil.
