1. A national anthem, also referred to as a national hymn, state anthem or national song, or simply as a hymn, is a patriotic piece of music consisting in most cases of a melody and lyrics. It is considered to be one of the state symbols, together with the national flag, the national coat of arms, and the national motto. In most cases the melody of a national anthem is composed as a hymn or as a march, some countries use a fanfare, while especially in Latin America the compositions tend to resemble opera music.
