1 Who judges are and how they are selected is critical to the quality and independence of the judiciary. The qualifications that a person must meet in order to be eligible for judicial appointment ensure that judges have the expertise to resolve disputes according to law. Procedures for the selection of judges protect the judiciary from politically motivated appointments and undue influence, while also connecting the judiciary to the society it serves.
