The Bolivarian1 State of Mérida is an autonomous political entity with its legal personality, which is part in a federal, decentralized and egalitarian manner of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. 1 Given that Bolivar was a rich, somewhat autocratic landowner whose campaign against Spanish rule had little to do with social justice, it is rather odd that the socialist Chavez regime should choose this epithet to characterize the new regime.
