Since the end of 2010, popular protests, revolts, and revolutions have shaken North Africa and the Middle East. The so-called Arab Spring, which had been triggered by the desperate self-immolation of the Tunisian street vendor Muḥammad Būʿazīzī, turned into a historical opportunity for fundamental political and constitutional change.
