Shortly before his death, Max Weber published an op-ed in the Berliner Börsenzeitung, calling for the direct election of the Reichpräsident in the newly founded Weimar Republic. His colleague, Friedrich Ebert, a member of the German Social Democratic Party, had just been elected president, through an indirect method, by the members of the National Assembly.
