The judicial power of this state shall be vested in one supreme court, and in such inferior courts as the general assembly may, from time to time, ordain and establish. This section originated as Article X, Section 1, of the 1843 constitution. In 1986 the people adopted the section verbatim, and the wording is unchanged. Article X, Section 2, added to the constitution in 1903 by Article of Amendment XII, governs the jurisdiction of the supreme court and all other state courts.
