The permanent seat of government of this State shall be at the City of Raleigh. Raleigh, named for the English explorer Sir Walter Raleigh, who organized the first English settlement in North America (on Roanoke Island, North Carolina), was founded by the General Assembly in 1792 to be the state capital. Although all three branches of state government are in fact centered there, only the governor has a constitutional duty to remain in residence (Article III, Section 5, Subsection 1).
