Anjouan, also known by its Comorian name of Ndzuwani or Nzwani, is one of the three autonomous islands making up the Union of the Comoros. It is situated to the northwest of Madagascar and due east of Mozambique in the Indian Ocean. It covers an area of 424 square kilometers (163 square miles) and has a population of around 277,500. Anjouan has three official languages—Comorian, French and Arabic—but the great majority of its inhabitants are Comorians. The capital of the Island is Mutsamudu.
