Lower Austria lies in the northeast of Austria. It borders on Slovakia and the Czech Republic to the north, Upper Austria to the west, Styria to the south and Burgenland to the east. It covers an area of 19,186 square kilometers, making it the largest State in Austria. It has the second largest population after Vienna with 1,636,287 inhabitants at the last census. The City-State of Vienna was carved out of Lower Austria in 1920. The capital is St. Pölten.
