The State of Espírito Santo is located on the southeast coast of Brazil. It is bordered on the north by the State of Bahia, on the west by that of Minas Gerais, on the south by that of Rio de Janeiro and on the east by the Atlantic Ocean. It covers an area of 46,077.5 square kilometers (17,790.6 square miles) and, as of 2014, had a population of 3,885,049. The capital was originally established at Vila Velha but was moved to Vitória due to frequent raids by Amerindians.
