Uri is of the twenty-six cantons of Switzerland. It lies roughly in the middle of the country and is surrounded by other Swiss cantons. It is bordered on the south by Ticino (Tessin), on the west by Valais (Wallis), Berne and the two half-cantons, Obwalden and Nidwalden, on the north by Schwyz and on the east by Glarus and Grisons (Graubünden). Its surface area is 1,077 square kilometers (416 square miles) and its population, as at 2019, was 36,433. It is German-speaking and the overwhelming majority are Roman Catholic.
