The Puntland State of Somalia is an autonomous region of the federal state of Somalia. It is situated in the northeast of the country. It is bordered on the west by the self-declared sovereign state of Somaliland, on the north by the Gulf of Aden, on the west by the Indian Ocean and on the south by Galmudug State and Ethiopia. Puntland covers an area of 212,510 square kilometers (82,050 square miles) and, in a 2016 estimate, had a population of 4,280,000. The capital is Garowe.
