Illinois—the Prairie State, the Land of Lincoln—is in the heartland of the United States. Since Illinois became a state in 1818, it has been a microcosm of the country at every stage: a “free” state where whites were ambivalent about giving equal rights to blacks; a state of Northern European settlers who absorbed thousands of Eastern and Southern Europeans in waves of immigration; a state rich in agriculture and industry whose produce and products now travel around the world; and a state with a megalopolis, smaller cities, rural villages, and now a suburban area...
