The chief executive power of this state shall be vested in a governor, who, together with a lieutenant governor, shall be elected by the people. This section appeared in the 1843 constitution as Article VII, Section 1. The only difference from the present text was that the earlier version called for annual elections of these offices. The people later amended this section by Article of Amendment XVI (1911), Section 1, to provide for biennial elections.
