No person shall hold any civil office unless that person be a qualified elector for such office. Article IX, Section 1, of the 1843 constitution, on which this section is based, read: “No person shall be eligible to any civil office (except the office of school committee) unless he be a qualified elector for such office.” The framers of the 1843 document included this curious exception to allow women to serve on local school committees.
