The first constitution written in the area now called “Oklahoma” was written by Native Americans. The word “Oklahoma” is a Choctaw word meaning “home of the red people.” A brief historical account of the creation of the state shows how it came to be called Oklahoma, and helps provide the framework for a better understanding of Oklahoma’s Constitution.
