Religion, morality and knowledge being necessary to good government and the happiness of mankind, schools and the means of education shall forever be encouraged. The language of section 1 is drawn from the Northwest Ordinance of 1787. Neither the Constitution of 1835 or the Constitution of 1850 contained a similar declaration of principle.
